When Satire Goes Wrong: The Story Of The Oxo Tower, Cubes, Cocktails & 50,000+ Redditors

The last 48 hours have been interesting for me and this blog. It all started with this post: What Are The Best Things To Do In London That No One Knows About?.

The post is just a collection of the best responses from this reddit thread by cr3 and has been online for well over a year.

What Are The Best Things To Do In London That No One Knows About?

Reddit user cr3ative (twitter @cr3) has a few ideas I bet you may not have heard of:

For example did you know this about the London Eye?

223 - London Eye on The Thames

Between 3am and 4am (usually, weather permitting), the London Eye is put in to a self-cleaning cycle and rotates at about 6RPM. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but that’s one revolution every 10 seconds! It gets all the rain, dust, grime etc off, all the mud etc ends up in the thames.

They don’t “offically” allow you to ride it in this time, but slipping the cleaners (who aren’t the normal ride operators) £20 will get you on one of the pods.

It’s a hell of a rush but tbh only a matter of time until someone gets hurt and they stop this.

Or how Celebrity Spotting works?

Celebrity Spotting in London is a fun hobby, but the first and only rule is DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THEM OR POINT, it’s rude and intrudes on their day, and then we won’t get to see them again.

Boy George hangs out at Cargo in Shoreditch quite often for example. Go out and hang around the pubs and clubs and see how many celebs you can spot in one night.

Each celeb has a card punching tool which verifies you have seen them. Ask politely when they’re not busy and they’ll punch a card for you. Once you have a card with ten punches on, the City of London police will let you have a go on their taser gun (in the safety of their training course).

I tasered an owl out of a tree on my go, and it was fucking hilarious.

What Were Hammersmith and Fulham Council Thinking When They Made This Video?

I’m not sure if the video above is serious production by Hammersmith and Fulham Council or not. I found it via reddit user Scary_, with the general consensus seeming to be that it’s real. If real, it’s nice that they’re thanking their residents for saving the council millions. Residents will feel even better when they see that the council haven’t wasted those savings on a high budget thank you video.

Is There Any Doubt We Are In Drought?

We are in drought

What: WE ARE IN DROUGHT

By: (If you know please let me know)

When: April, 2012

Where: London, UK

Why: Well given that it’s election day I thought we could all do with some cheering up. This ironic drought photo, was making the rounds last week. However, I thought I’d post it here in the off chance you haven’t already seen it. I first saw it on this Reddit thread, but I gather it’s been featured in many other places as well. Really sums up the last two months of London weather.

London: A Guide for the Naive

London: A Guide for the Naive from SamGould on Vimeo.

I came across this spoof documentary or mockumentary about London from the Londonist blog. Essentially, it tells you everything you ever wanted to know about London’s history, if you don’t care about things like facts or accuracy. As a spoof it works fairly well and is certainly worth a watch.

Some highlights include the secret order of the black cab which controls London, the fact that the Thames was a gift from Egypt and that the rich don’t bother with regular Oyster cards, but instead have their own special payment system. There are plenty of other amusing bits as well, that will get you sounding like a true Londoner in no time.

While not the fumiest thing I’ve ever seen, it will make you chuckle, especially if you know a thing or two about London’s history and landmarks.
